Support Alexander Strukov

Alexander Strukov is a former photographer of Navalny’s office in Moscow. He has been in custody since the 28th of January 2022, due to comments he made in the Telegram chat of the outlet Znak.com. Experts interpreted these comments as a “threat of committing violent destructive actions” and “justification of destructive terrorist acts aimed at eliminating employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB, members of the United Russia party, and representatives of the judiciary.” The court sentenced him to 7 years and 10 months in a general regime penal colony and a fine of 180,000 rubles (approx. 2293 $).

While in the colony, Strukov was repeatedly sent to solitary confinement—altogether spending about three months in the punishment cell. He was assigned to work in a brick-cutting workshop, and due to the dusty environment, his face, hands, and legs became inflamed. Stukov suffers from chronic asthma and bronchitis, and during his time there he developed eczema, but the colony administration ignored his request for hospitalization to confirm his chronic diagnoses.

Despite the deterioration of his health, the colony administration refused him medical care. Requests from his lawyer to the regional office of Federal Penitentiary Service, to the prosecutor’s office, and the human rights commissioner were ignored. Recently, it became known that a new case was opened against him for “public calls for terrorist activity” related to unspecified “events” in 2023, while he was already serving his sentence.

The "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" project, together with the Memorial Center, launched a campaign in support of Alexander.

We jointly submitted 484 appeals to the Federal Penitentiary Service offices and the Human Rights Commissioner of the Tver region, demanding that the violations of Alexander Strukov’s rights be addressed and that he be provided access to medical care.

On the 11th of May, it became publicly known that Alexander Strukov was transferred to a hospital and began receiving medical care.

What’s next?

We hope that Alexander will receive all the necessary medical care. We have temporarily paused the petition campaign but continue to closely monitor the situation.
